Google Business Profile Optimization: The Complete 2026 Checklist
47-point Google Business Profile optimization checklist used by Rank To Revenue to rank service businesses in the local 3-pack. Categories, services, photos, posts, Q&A, and the GBP signals that actually move rankings.
Why GBP optimization is 70% of local SEO
Your Google Business Profile is the single largest input into your local rankings. A fully optimized GBP can outrank competitors with bigger websites, more backlinks, and longer histories — purely because Google trusts the profile more.
Categories — get this right or nothing else matters
Pick the most specific primary category that describes your core service. 'Dentist' is too broad if you're a 'Cosmetic dentist'. Add every secondary category that legitimately applies — but don't stuff irrelevant ones (Google will demote you).
Services & service areas
List every service you offer using the exact phrases people search. If you serve multiple cities, add each one as a service area. For service-area businesses, hide your address and define a clear radius.
Photos — quantity, quality, and freshness
Upload 20+ real photos: exterior, interior, team, products, before/after, and your logo. Add new photos every week — recency is a ranking signal. Geotag images where you can.
Posts, Q&A, and messaging
Publish a Google Post weekly (offers, events, updates). Seed your own Q&A with the questions customers actually ask. Turn on messaging and respond within an hour during business hours.
Reviews and review responses
Aim for a steady stream of 5-star reviews with keywords used naturally in the review text. Respond to every single review — Google parses your responses as additional content tied to your profile.
